At Angel Investors Bristol, we see hundreds of pitch decks every year. The founders who successfully secure a “yes” aren’t always the ones with the most complex technology; they are the ones who can tell a clear, compelling story in under 15 minutes.
Investors’ attention is a finite resource. To capture it, you need a deck that is visual, data-driven, and concise. Here is a 10-slide blueprint we suggest for any founder pitching to our South West network.
Slide 1: The Hook (Vision & Purpose)
Start with a bang. Your first slide should have your logo, a high-quality visual, and a one-sentence “elevator pitch.”
- The Goal: Within 5 seconds, an investor should know exactly what you do.
- Example: “We are the ‘Stripe’ for renewable energy credits in the South West.”
Slide 2: The Problem (The Pain Point)
Identify a specific, urgent gap in the market. Why does this need to be solved now?
- Local Angle: If your problem has a specific regional context (e.g., Bristol’s Clean Air Zone or the South West’s housing crisis), mention it here to build immediate rapport with local angels.
Slide 3: The Solution (The “Aha!” Moment)
Show, don’t just tell. Use a screenshot, a prototype photo, or a simple diagram of how your product works.
- Focus: How does your solution make the customer’s life 10x better or cheaper?
Slide 4: Market Opportunity (TAM/SAM/SOM)
Investors want to see that your “pond” is big enough.
- The Numbers: Define your Total Addressable Market (the global dream) and your Serviceable Obtainable Market (the realistic target for the next 2 years).
Slide 5: Traction (The Proof)
This is the most important slide for many angels. It proves you aren’t just a “dreamer.”
- What to include: Monthly recurring revenue (MRR), user growth, signed pilots, or major partnerships. If you’re pre-revenue, show letters of intent (LOIs) or waitlist numbers.
Slide 6: The Business Model (How You Make Money)
Keep it simple. Are you a SaaS subscription? A marketplace taking a 10% cut? A hardware seller?
- The Goal: Show a clear path to profitability.
Slide 7: The Competitive Landscape
Never say “we have no competitors.” It suggests you haven’t researched the market.
- The Matrix: Use a 2×2 grid or a feature checklist to show where you sit compared to incumbents. Highlight your “unfair advantage.”
Slide 8: The Team (The “Why You”)
At the seed stage, angels invest in the founders more than the business.
- The Details: Highlight relevant “exit” experience, deep technical expertise, or unique industry insights. Include photos—it makes you human.
Slide 9: The Financials & Roadmap
Show a high-level 3-year forecast. Be realistic; overly aggressive hockey-stick graphs often trigger skepticism.
- The Roadmap: What are the 3 major milestones you will hit in the next 18 months?
Slide 10: The Ask (The Goal)
Be specific.
- The Details: “We are raising £300,000 (SEIS/EIS eligible) to hire two engineers and launch our Bristol pilot.”
- The Close: End with your contact details and a clear “Next Step” (e.g., “Join us for a demo”).
Three “Pro-Tips” for Bristol Founders:
- Visuals over Verbiage: Use big fonts and minimal text. If they are reading your slides, they aren’t listening to you.
- The “Appendix” is your friend: Keep 5–10 extra slides at the back of the deck covering technical details or deep-dive financials to pull out during Q&A.
- Mention SEIS/EIS: If you have Advance Assurance from HMRC, put the logo on Slide 10. It is a massive green flag for UK angels.
